3 Types Of Men’s Suits

As a fashionable male, you need to familiarize yourself with the different types of men’s suits available in the big, BIG world of the men’s fashion. When you browse various fashion magazines (yes, you are allowed to touch those magazines), some of the most common terms that you will encounter when looking at men’s suits are off the rack (OTR), made to measure (MTM) and bespoke.

If you want to look great for an event that you are going to, a big meeting at work, or any other occasion where you need to look sharp  it is recommended that you understand the differences between the type of suits and what look will work best for you and your style.

1. Off The Rack

Go to the mall and take a look at the different suits on display– these are your run-of-the-mill off the rack men’s suits. This type of suit is machine made and is produced in bulk. The quality varies depending on the materials used. Given the fact that these are mass produced, you may find it hard to find a size that will fit you perfectly. If you plan to go with this option, it would behoove you to get it tailored there or take it to the tailor of your choice for further fitting. Just make sure it fits you in the shoulders before you buy.

Why Wear: Men tend to lean toward this option because it is highly affordable and widely available. Also known as ready to wear suits.

Why Not: As mentioned above, this suit is not designed to take your specific sizing into consideration. When it comes to suits, keep in mind that one size does not fit all. If you are looking for a great fit, off the rack suits will not always give you that unless you would want to shell out extra money for tailoring services. Even getting an OTR suit tailored still doesn’t guarantee a perfect fit, there is only so much that can be done with the suit at that point. In addition to that, you would have limited options when it comes to construction and fabric choices. Limited in this sense to what they have in store.

A Piece of Fashion Advice: If you would not want to spend a fortune on a suit, this is the best option out there. However, it is recommended that you look for a suit that would have a great shoulder fit. If not, at least go and get it tailored for a slightly better fit.

2. Made To Measure

Another term used for this option is custom suiting. This type of suit is already pre-patterned but is able to be altered to different sizes for the perfect fit. Although most made to measure suits are machine made, this option gives you more control. The choice of fabric, details and the like is up to you.

Why Wear: This suit option allows you to have more control over how the suit will look. In addition to that, you get better fit and quality.

Why Not: This option is more expensive than off the rack. Plus, since it is not yet made it will take longer to receive.

A Piece of Fashion Advice: If you can afford this option, then (by all means) go for it. It is recommended that you choose a suit where you have more control on the fit and style.

3. Bespoke

This is the epitome of customization. This option features the highest level of craftsmanship and quality. This option is unique in all aspects– from the design up to the measurement. With this option, you can have a suit which would really show who you are. Every man should experience what it’s like to own a handmade bespoke suit at some point in their life.

Why Wear: This options offers great quality, amazing craftsmanship, and full control of style, fit and pattern.

Why Not: Bespoke suits require the greatest investments in both time and money.

A Piece of Fashion Advice: For people who are willing to spend money for their suits, there is no reason for you not to go for this option. Go for a classic color that will never go out of style like charcoal. Also, choose a material that you will get the most use out of depending on the climate where you live. Wool is always a great choice.
